What Lies Within

Women in the Hijaz traditionally stored clothes and precious belongings in a fabric bundle called Bugsha. They were also used to save a bride's clothes when transporting them to her husband's house, or to send gifts.

Made with affordable fabrics, remnants of old fabrics, or expensive colored silk with decorated edges and often studded with large beads, the fabric is gathered and knotted or pinned to safeguard its contents.
The unconventional representation of Bugshas in this series explores the connection between the past, present and future. What lies within each are the treasured hopes, dreams and expectations of our matriarchs … that their descendants would go further and do more than they could have ever imagined.
